Montville father to serve 10 years for child abuse case

Published 12/08/2010 12:00 AM

A Montville father pleaded no contest to inflicting severe injuries on his 4-month-old daughter last year and will be sentenced in February to 10 years in prison.

Jeffrey Mears, 30, of Montville, accepted an offer from the state to plead nolo contendere to first-degree assault. He will be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison, suspended after 10 years served and five years' probation. At the sentencing, his attorney will have the opportunity to argue that the 20 years be reduced.

Mears and the baby's mother, Jaime Carr, were arrested after Carr took the child to the pediatrician and the doctor noticed she had multiple bruises and a broken left arm. A follow-up exam at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center showed that she had injuries "consistent with multiple episodes of inflicted injury," including a healing fracture of the clavicle, healing fractures in both arms, multiple healing and fractured ribs, healing fractures to both legs and a probable skull fracture.

Mears, who watched the child while Carr was at work, denied hurting the baby intentionally but told police that his judgment was clouded by the marijuana and alcohol he uses constantly. He said he had fallen with her in his arms once. He told state police he was "generally rough" with her, that he "bobbles her around a lot."

Carr's case is pending.

Man accused of child abuse to return to court

LITCHFIELD — A North Canaan man who police say abused his child had his case continued until Oct. 22.

Dustin Lawrence, 19, of North Canaan, remains in custody on $200,000 bond after being arrested July 21 on warrant for charges of risk of injury to a minor, cruelty to persons and first-degree assault.

According to his arrest warrant, Lawrence allegedly brought his three-month-old baby to Sharon Hospital where medical officials — and later police — determined the child had suffered abuse, court documents stated.

Man admits killing ex-wife as 3 kids waited

DANIEL TEPFER

BRIDGEPORT — A man pleaded guilty Wednesday to fatally stabbing his former wife more than a dozen times here while the couple's three young children cowered in another room.

Xavier Figueroa, 33, dressed in a bright yellow prison jumpsuit, pleaded guilty before Superior Court Judge George Thim to murder and risk of injury to a minor.

The family of his former wife sat stoically in the back of the courtroom during the hearing and declined comment as they left.

Senior Assistant State's Attorney C. Robert Satti Jr. told the judge he would recommend Figueroa serve a 27-year prison term when he is sentenced Aug. 7.

According to Satti, on Oct. 21, 2006, the defendant, who had moved to Hamden, lured his former wife to the home on Wedgwood Place, in Bridgeport, where they previously had lived. She arrived there with her three young children.

While Figueroa had the children wait in an upstairs room, Satti said he and the woman went to the basement where, after an argument, he pulled out a knife and began stabbing her. Satti said the victim was stabbed at least 17 times.

Satti said Figueroa later dropped the children at his sister-in-law's home in Norwalk and then turned himself in to Norwalk police, telling them he had, "just hurt his wife real bad."

In the meantime, the prosecutor said, Bridgeport police had been called to the Wedgwood Place home by the woman's family and found her lying dead in the basement.

Satti said Bridgeport police later found the

victim's blood on the clothing Figueroa was wearing that day.

He said police recovered a number of e-mails Figueroa had previously sent his former wife in which he threatened to kill her.

Figueroa told the judge he agreed with the facts of the case as presented by the prosecutor.
