Ga. couple
gets 40 years in child abuse case- WATKINSVILLE,
Ga. -- A judge in Oconee County sentenced a couple who kept the woman's son locked in a closet to 40 years apiece
in prison and called it the worst case involving child abuse he'd handled in a dozen years.
Superior Court Judge Steve Jones sentenced 36-year-old Damita Devonna Peak and 39-year-old
Norris Lazarus Walker on Thursday after a jury convicted them of false imprisonment, child cruelty and battery. They were
acquitted of aggravated assault charges. The verdict capped a 10-day trial in which jurors heard from
the boy and his younger brother, school officials, doctors, police officers and the defendants. Testimony
showed the couple locked the woman's 12-year-old son naked in a closet, shot him with a pellet gun, pepper-sprayed him
and deprived him of food. Peak and Walker told jurors they punished the boy because he constantly got
in trouble and didn't respond to traditional forms of punishment. They said they didn't want him to die from drugs
or end up in prison. Peak testified that she began punishing her son when he was 9 or 10, when they
lived in Miami. The family moved to Georgia in 2006 and ended up in Athens two years later when Peak got a job as a jailer
in Walton County, where she was issued handcuffs and pepper spray. The family moved at the end of November
2008 to the Wellington Park duplex complex in Bogart, where the boy slept on a closet floor with a Batman blanket each night
until the couple were arrested. Peak and Walker fed him only water and bread, sometimes with peanut butter, while he was locked
up. They also tied his hands or handcuffed them to a clothes bar so he wouldn't drop his arms. "You
don't have to have a law degree, you don't have to have a medical degree, you don't have to have a high school
diploma to know that was wrong," Jones told the defendants. The boy wrote
a statement saying he continues to have bad dreams, but added, "I understand why they did it and I want to say I love
them so much and I miss them."

NORTON SHORES -- The man who
ran over his sleeping son at a Muskegon-area campground is wanted in Georgia on charges related to a felony child
abuse conviction, according to local law enforcement officials.
Muskegon County Prosecutor Tony Tague said his office is working with state Child Protective
Services to investigate Daniel Nichols, 27, who early Wednesday morning ran over a tent at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park in which
his two young children and wife were sleeping. His 5-year-old
son was seriously injured. The boy's condition has been upgraded from serious to fair, according to a spokeswoman with
DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids. "We're
focusing on the history of Nichols, and we understand there's an outstanding warrant out of Georgia," Tague said. That arrest warrant is for a probation violation related to a felony conviction for child abuse, Tague said.
He said his office is contacting Georgia officials to learn more about Nichols' background. He said his investigators have learned Nichols was absent without leave from the U.S. Army at the time of
the child abuse conviction, though he since has been discharged from the service. Nichols served during the Iraq war and has been receiving assistance from the Muskegon County Department of
Veterans Affairs. "His record has not been without incident
in the service," Tague said. Nichols told police that he
had gotten into the family's sport utility vehicle to warm it up because of the chilly morning air and apparently fell
asleep. The vehicle, which has an automatic transmission, then somehow slipped into gear and rolled over the tent, causing
head injuries to the boy who was airlifted to the Grand Rapids hospital. Tague
said investigators have ordered a full drug and alcohol blood screening of Nichols, results of which are expected next week,
he said. In addition, the vehicle will be inspected for any malfunctions,
he said. Nichols and his family have a history of homelessness,
and spent about six months over two years at a local shelter for homeless veterans. They had been staying at Hoffmaster for
about a week and a half.

Story Published: Sep 9, 2008 at 9:57 AM EST Story Updated: Sep 12, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST AUGUSTA, Ga. - A mother is in the Richmond County jail accused of trying
to sell her baby. Investigators
say Amanda Johnson and Michael Jenkins, the father of the seven-month-old baby, were trying to use the child as a loan to
support their drug addiction. "People loan their cars out
for crack or jewelry to local drug dealers. But you never want to think someone would loan out a human being to support their
drug habit," said Inv. Kendall Brown, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses
say the baby’s parents and a drug dealer were smoking crack cocaine on Friday night at the Augusta Lodge while the baby
was in the room. Deputies say witnesses overheard Johnson and
her boyfriend making a deal with the drug dealer. "They
were both part of the deal. They were willing to let their child go with a complete stranger for an unknown amount of crack
cocaine,” said Brown. A deal investigators say has serious
consequences. Johnson is charged with one count of cruelty to
a child and reckless conduct. Her seven-month-old is in state custody. Investigators
are still looking for the baby's father, Michael Jenkins, and the drug dealer. Anyone with information is asked to call

Bodies of toddlers, father found in Georgia
(CNN) -- Investigators have found the bodies of three small children and the
father who allegedly abducted them from their home in Columbus, Georgia, two weeks ago, the FBI said Wednesday.
The mother of Cedric Harrington, 3, begged Eddie Harrington not to harm him or the
twins.
"It is my sad duty to report that deceased bodies of these children and Eddie Harrington
were located this afternoon," said FBI Special Agent Gerald Green.
A coroner would confirm the identities, he added.
The remains were discovered in a wooded area of Columbus by a person walking nearby,
Green said.
Eddie Harrington, 28, whom police described
as depressed, took the children March 5, police said.
Before he left, Harrington sent a letter indicating his intent to kill his twin 23-month-old
girls, Aliyah and Agana Battle, and his son, Cedric Harrington, 3, officials said.
The day before Wednesday's grisly discovery, the children's mother told CNN's Nancy
Grace that Harrington had threatened them before.
"He's just told me he'll do anything to keep me at that time, and he said that he
was going to take them and ... kill himself and the kids," Agena Battle said.
"But then later on, he told me that it was just to prove to me that, you know, what
he'll do for me."
Battle also described the moment earlier this month when she knew something was wrong.
"I got home and I realized that the kids weren't there, and Eddie wasn't there either,
and when I looked on the dresser and read the note, that's when I realized that my kids are in trouble," she said.
A week ago, a tearful Battle publicly begged her boyfriend
not to harm the children.
"I am asking the public to please help me. I want my children home where they belong,
with me," she said at an FBI news conference.
"Please, if you see Eddie, the car or the children, please call 911. Please help
me and keep them in your prayers."
A child abduction alert was issued in Georgia after the children disappeared.
"We
have great concern for the safety of these children," Green said at the time.
It was unclear what sparked Harrington's
decision to take the children, authorities said.

In Georgia, Tina Richards, 19, is charged with aggravated assault and battery, and first and second degree
child cruelty. Her ten-month old son remains in critical condition at a hospital in Savannah.
Emergency medical servives arrived at Richard’s home after receiving a 911 call that she fell with the child
while getting into the shower. According to the call, the child was having trouble breathing.
EMS told the police that the baby’s injuries were not consistent with the story since he was completely
dry and his injuries were not consistent with a fall. The boy had dried blood in its nostrils and could only breathe
when held upright. EMS found the baby had bruises on his arms and around his head. He may have a broken nose and
other facial injuries.
At the home, the sheriff recovered a onesie sewed into the bed sheet, yarn may have been used to maybe strap the child’s legs down, and duct tape.
Oh god.
They are investigating to see if Richards was suffering from post partum depression. Even so, this isn’t the
first time she was found abusing her son. Richards was arrested last summer on cruelty to children and battery charges. At that time the boy, had a bruised eye and black and blue marks on both arms.
Richards plead guilty to both charges and was sentenced to five years probation and $1350 in fines.
Why did this woman get her son back? Needless to say, local officials are investigating.
